Our Story

The Lion & Porcupine is a story of contrast, character, and a shared dream brought to life.

Set within the limestone walls of a historic Mineral Point building, our seven-room inn (and pub  to come) has been lovingly restored with a deep respect for what came before. Handhewn beams stretch overhead, local artists line the walls, and every detail has been chosen to create a space that feels both storied and intimate. Behind it all are two very different paths.

Louise grew up in a British village, where the pub was the heart of the community—a place of warmth, wit, and welcome. To capture that spirit, we’ve created cozy nooks and communal spaces to enjoy each others company —so you feel exactly where you’re meant to be

Julian is an African focused zoologist, who has studied lions and porcupines—an unlikely pairing, if ever there was one. In the wild, lions may hunt porcupines, but more often than not, it is the porcupine that prevails: a reminder that strength comes in many forms, and that the most interesting stories live in contrast.

The name The Lion & Porcupine felt inevitable—

characterful, a little unexpected, and entirely our own. A meeting of boldness and resilience, of heritage and curiosity.

What we’ve created is not just an inn, but a place with soul. Somewhere to gather, to linger, to discover.

Whether you’re here for a drink in the pub, a quiet night in one of our rooms, or simply passing through, we hope you feel the warmth, the story, and the spirit of this place.
